My House and I (1929) - Mary Starbuck
Edition: 1st edition Binding: Hard Cover Publisher: Houghton Mifflin, Co. Published: 1929 Condition: Very Good, tight binding, front page inscription Summary: Mary Eliza Starbuck (1856-1938), known as "Molly," was the daughter of a Nantucket whaling captain and became the founding secretary of the Nantucket Historical Association, a poet, and the author of this book of memoirs, My House and I. Gifted with words and enchanted with a sense of Nantucket's fragile past, this "minor Mary" dwelt in the quiet twilight of a vanished world-but was one of the island's first modern women. Unmarried, living alone at 8 Pleasant Street surrounded by her Walter Folger Jr. clock, her astronomical telescope, and her beloved Isabella grapevines, she remained betrothed to her house: "We have our friends, my house and I, even our lovers." Personal Notes: In my opinion, this is one of the key books of any Nantucket collection. Mary Starbuck was one of Nantucket's most gifted women but is not as well known as Maria Mitchell or Lucretia Mott Coffin. My House and I is a beautifully written memoir of life on the island during the decline of the whaling industy. The book is rare, making it more fun to add to your collection. Put it on the bookshelf in your Nantucket living room after you finish reading it and it makes a suble announcement to your friends that you have a keen knowledge of Nantucket culture. (As far as I know she published only one other book - Nantucket and Other Poems.) SHIPPING INCLUDED Product SKU: BK2425-09
