Edition: 1st edition  Binding: Hard Cover  Publisher: Viking  Published: 2000 Length:  302 pages  Condition: Book - Like New, Dust Jacket - Very Good   Summary: True account of an 1820 Nantucket whaling-ship, the Essex, that was stove and sunk by a whale. Philbrick chronicles the crew's three-month journey of survival across open sea in small whaleboats. In the Heart of the Sea includes much whaling lore and a closeup view of life in 19th-century Nantucket.   Personal Note:  This is one of the greatest whaling stories of them all and one of the greatest retellings.  Philbrick won the National Book Award for this rendition.  Edouard Stackpole wrote an account of it in booklet form in 1977 entitled, The Loss of the Essex, Sunk by a Whale.  The booklet is a hard-to-find collectible Nantucket book.  Both of these books relied heavily on a first hand account by the first mate Owen Chase (a Nantucketer).  His account Shipwreck of the Whaleship Essex is also a great title to add to your Nantucket collection.  Several other first hand accounts exist and are often published with Owen Chase's narrative.  Anyone interested in whaling must read about the Essex.
