Nantucket Lands and Land Owners (1992 reprint) - by Henry Barnard Worth
Edition: Facsimile Reprint Binding: Paperback Heritage Books, Inc. Published: 1992 Condition: Good Summary: This work is an early history of the island with emphasis on the land and its passage from owner to owner. It is based largely on the first three record books which include deeds, land grants, court proceedings, election results, and estate settlements, and includes abstracts of many such records. It describes in detail the lands and their owners, has two fold-out maps and photographs of many of the old homes. The book is a consolidation of Numbers 1-7 of Volume 2 of the "Nantucket Historical Association Bulletin" which was published intermittently around the turn of the 20th century. Personal Notes: This book is for serious Nantucket history buffs and is one of my personal favorites. It documents the earliest period of Nantucket's history including the period when the island was under the jurisdiction of New York (!), an era usually overshadowed by the more adventurous whaling days. It is well written and by far the most complete history of Nantucket's early years. Check out the section on the Half-Sharemen Revolt, a fascinating yet often overlooked chapter of Nantucket's rich history. SHIPPING INCLUDED Product SKU: BK2425-12
