Since the collapse of the whaling industry, Nantucket has remained more or less intact as one of the best preserved communites in the United States and a living architectural museum with about 800 buildings dating from before the time of the Civil War. The book is divided into three major sections, each considering Nantucket form a different angle.  Part One gives a history of the island with an analysis of the architectural styles.  Part Two treats Nantucket Town street by street and can be used as a walking tour guide with emphasis on architecture.   Part Three contains appendices classifying all of the historic builidings according to their styles. Personal Note:  A serious study in Nantucket architecture.  Hundreds of great photos and heavily  footnoted. Among the rarest of Nantucket books. Only one printing to my knowledge. I have seen copies selling for as much as $250.
